Athlete of the Week: Cascade's Derek Lieurance

CASCADE (KWWL) -

It almost seems like Cascade quarterback Derek Lieurance came right out of nowhere -- but the truth is -- he's been doing this a while.

Derek:  I've always played quarterback, starting in flag football in 5th grade.

Tim Frake Cascade Head Coach: - He's led that sophomore team the last 2 seasons as a freshman and sophomore, so he's got some good experience, so we knew he could play football.

But until a few weeks ago, Derek hadn't had a chance to prove that at the varsity level.  That's no longer the case as his 11-hundred-46 passing yards ranks second in class 2-A -- with his biggest performance coming last Friday.  Derek threw for 345 yards and 3 scores in the Cougars upset of sixth ranked Union.

Derek: We were like, "you know what, we don't have anything to lose.  We went out there and it just went our way.  Our defense played great, our line held, receivers go open."

Frake:  You could see Friday night, we don't get exactly what we want to get, he gets a different read or has to go to his 2nd, 3rd option, he's just able to make plays, and you can't coach that.

Derek:  My line holds up, gives me 3 to 4 seconds, my receivers get open, and things happen.

But winning last Friday was one thing -- that was a non-district game -- and led by Derek Lieurance -- the Cougars have bigger goals --

Derek:  We're looking to win our district, prove everybody wrong -- Lost about 9 starters, people think we're young and inexperienced.  We're trying to show them that experience doesn't matter.

And so far the Cougars have proven that -- as they're quickly moving out of the underdog role to a team that's now got a target on its back.  I
