Toy gun found on Dubuque elementary school playground

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

For the third time in a month, Dubuque parents are learning about a toy gun found on school property.

Michael Cyze, Director of School and Community Relations for the Dubuque Community School District, says Lincoln Elementary School parents were notified Thursday afternoon via email and phone that a 15-year-old was found carrying a toy gun on the playground at around dismissal time.

According to the letter, a middle school student saw it and reported it to the office.

Lincoln Elementary principal Donna Loewen says police contained the situation and there was never a threat to the school.

The incident did delay dismissal for a few minutes.

The first two incidents happened in September and involved airsoft guns which are similar to BB or pellet guns.

In the first, three Washington Middle School students brought a total of four airsoft guns to school. The discovery prompted officials to put the school on lockdown.

The second happened the following week when an airsoft gun was fired at least twice on a school bus carrying Roosevelt Middle and Hempstead High school students.

Here is the letter that was sent to families following the latest incident:

Good afternoon Lincoln Families,

Today around dismissal time, a middle school student in the area reported to the office that there was a gun present on the Lincoln Elementary School playground.

911 was immediately called and officers responded within minutes. It was quickly determined that a 15-year-old was carrying a TOY gun on the playground. Police contained the situation and THERE WAS NEVER ANY ACTUAL THREAT TO LINCOLN STUDENTS OR STAFF.

Dismissal was delayed for a few moments while police contained the situation and we were then given the all clear to begin dismissal.

It is important to note that the student who reported the incident took exactly the right course of action in reporting it to officials. Real or not, all weapons are treated as actual threats until proven otherwise.

We wanted you to be aware of the situation so you know exactly what happened.

Sincerely,

Donna Loewen

Principal, Lincoln Elementary
