Family remembers Lyric Cook on birthday

Posted: Updated:

For the families of Lyric Cook and Elizabeth Collins, dealing with their grief this past year has been a work in progress.

"It's really hard everyday," said Wylma Cook, Lyric's grandmother. "It doesn't seem to get any easier."

Wednesday was Lyric's birthday, and family & friends gathered at Meyer's Lake, where the girls first went missing.

"Lyric would have been 12 today," said Tammy Brousseau, Lyric's aunt. "I wish she was here and Elizabeth too, to celebrate with us."

They released purple balloons to honor Lyric.

Just across the water, another work in progress: Angels Park, which is being built to commemorate the two murdered Evansdale girls. Construction is still moving forward on the park. They plan to install sidewalks this fall, among other things.

"That'll be a big enhancement with the gazebo, and things that have been built," said Steve Seible, who is involved in coordinating construction of the park. "And then the trees give it a scenic look again because it's bare."

Officials said they expect the park to be completed next year. But in the meantime, as construction continues, so does this family's emotional journey.

The balloon release was just another step along the way, but an important one for the grieving relatives.

"You feel a sense of peace in your heart," said Brousseau. "Before, while they were missing, there was no peace at all."
