Many 'making the cut' for Locks of Love in Dubuque

Many waited Wednesday afternoon in the Wendt Regional Cancer Center at UnityPoint Health-Finley Hospital in Dubuque for their chance to donate hair for a cause.  Wednesday afternoon was Dubuque's 10th year for Locks of Love. At the event, both men and women donated at least 10 inches of hair. That hair will be made into custom-fitted hair prostheses which will be given to children under the age of 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.

Mike Kelly is the Clinical Director for UnityPoint Health-Finley Hospital's Wendt Regional Cancer Center.

"It's very important for people to have hair prostheses like this because of self image, he said. "They are going through a lot of issues anyhow and the last thing that they want to do is be singled out when they are out and about. This way they can go through their everyday normal life with a head of hair."

This year, 12 different local salons provided these free haircuts to individuals who want to donate their hair to locks of love. Officials with UnityPoint Health-Finley Hospital expect more than 120 total hair donations at Wednesday's event.
