Sweet Tooth: Cravin' Sweets in Reinbeck

Posted: Updated:
REINBECK (KWWL) -

Growing up, Shari Kirkpatrick would bake with her mom and for her aunt and uncle's restaurant. She said being in the kitchen was her stress reliever.

"So I would do it for my calming peace time. I would just bake and give it away and people started to want to order stuff. So I turned it into a business," said Shari Kirkpatrick.

Kirkpatrick started Cravin' Sweets. She makes cookies and cake balls, and she's starting to get in to cupcakes. Cake balls and snickerdoodle cookies are her most popular items. Kirkpatrick bakes out of her home in Reinbeck and still works full-time at another job.

"I work during the day, and I come home and usually start baking. Bake until the middle of the night, sleep for a few hours and do the whole thing over again," said Kirkpatrick.

But Kirkpatrick said working and baking is a "good" busy. She suffers from fibromyalgia, which causes body-wide pain and tenderness in the joints and muscles. She said baking a lot is actually helping her muscle disorder.

"Because I'm not sitting all day," she said.

Most of Kirkpatrick's recipes come from her family, and she's happy to bake your family's recipes, too.

"If somebody has a family recipe, and they don't like to bake or don't have time to bake, I'll quote a price and make it for them. You can have a family recipe, but don't have to do the work," she said.

Kirkpatrick enjoys trying new flavors for her cake balls and cupcakes. Between her co-workers and her sons' friends, she isn't lacking for taste testers.
