DELAWARE COUNTY (KWWL) -

One eastern Iowa couple is having to replace their home for the 2nd time in 9 years. A fire ripped through Keith and Judy Steger's Delaware County home Friday morning. Keith Steger was the only one home at the time of the fire. He says the fire was started by the kitchen stove.

"I was making breakfast in the morning and I went down to the basement to watch the news," he said. "I left the burner on and it ignited a bowl of deep fried food and then just took off."

The couple had moved to that home after losing their previous home to a flood in Elkport in 2004. Steger said they were able to save more personal items when their house flooded in 2004 including some woodwork the couple incorporated into their Delaware County home.

"We took woodwork out of that house and put it into this house. We did a lot of remodeling, and put a lot of hard work into the house." Steger said. "This time we can't do it, we can't take the woodwork this time."

Steger said the speed of the fire prevented he and his wife from saving many of their belongings. The couple was able to save some pieces of furniture, clothing and photos.

"We were able to keep more stuff with the flooding because we were able to move it upstairs. But here, I got out with the clothes on my back and these worthless shoes," Steger said.

Saturday afternoon, Steger and his family worked to clean off some of the furniture that they were able to save with the fire. The couple's seven children also worked on creating a new home in a spare building on the property. Jeremy Steger is the couple's oldest son.

"You really can't put it into words. You just deal with it," he said. "You keep moving forward and don't look back. It's just the way it is, you just have to suck it up and keep pushing forward."

Keith Steger and his wife plan to do just that.

"We are just going to do it again. You know that's all you can do. Start over again. Hopefully this will be the last time. We thought this was it but I guess we were wrong." Keith Steger said.

A benefit is being held for the Stegers November 9th at the Elkport Garber Community Club.
