Eastern Iowan chosen for SNL cast

Posted: Updated:

It has always been a dream for Brooks Wheelan to perform on NBC's Saturday Night Live.

Wheelan is an Eastern Iowa native, born in Manchester and graduated high school from Hempstead High School in Dubuque.

His parents say in high school he didn't participate in speech or perform in plays in high school, instead they say he was an athlete and hit the books.

Though, they say in middle school, Wheelan gave a little hint that he wanted to be a performer.

"Yeah in 8th grade that presidential award they give kids they had a really nice presentation for them and they had to walk across the stage and they read their bibliography and his goal for the world was to be on Saturday Night Live," said Chris Wheelan.

Now, over a decade later Wheelan has reached that goal.

Wheelan's parents say he was always into comedy. While studying biomedical engineering at the University of Iowa, he would do stand-up on the side.

"Comedy was always, he was always interested in comedy, but yeah he actually is a scientist," said Jim Wheelan.

His college degree led him to work in Los Angeles, where he would still perform comedy when he could.

Comedy Central even included Wheelan in their top ten comedians to watch last year.

His parents say it was earlier this year Wheelan said 'SNL' producer Lorne Michaels was going to watch one of his sets. That eventually led him to an audition in New York.

"A few days later the call that said I bombed it, it's over. They didn't even smile. It was a good experience, but oh well. But a couple days later the phone call that says oh they hired me as a writer," said Jim Wheelan.

A few weeks after that phone call, Wheelan said he was included in the new cast as a featured player.

"He set his mind to do something and did it," said Jim Wheelan.
