Cedar Falls students make video to support classmate with leukemia

Posted: Updated:

All week long, students at Holmes Junior High in Cedar Falls could buy these yellow paper hats for 25 cents. More than $1,060 was raised for Will Reinhart, an eighth grader currently undergoing treatment for leukemia.

"We've got a few people that gave just a quarter, but almost everyone was giving $1, $5, $20," said Andrew McCormick.

The students wore the yellow hats Friday to tape a special video message for Will.

Art teacher Andrew McCormick made all the hats, but the idea of showing support for Will Reinhart during National Childhood Cancer Month came from his classmates.

"There was a table of four young ladies that really out of the blue said we should do something for Will Reinhart," said McCormick.

Classmates said Will has a great sense of humor and enjoys watching "Regular Show" on the Cartoon Network.

For the video, the students imitated one of the characters on the show and said hi to will.

"To have all of our students, nearly 600 kids wearing a hat and doing a silly video is just a nice message to send to him," said McCormick.

Students recorded everything with video cameras and plan to send the footage to Will soon.

"It was fun, and I got a lot of different shots. Leah (fellow student) and I get to edit it, and put together a video and hopefully he'll get to see it soon," said student Elise Leasure.

Students and teachers hope the video reminds Will to stay strong, and that he has lots of supporters in Cedar Falls.

"He knows people are thinking of him and looking forward to his return," said Andrew McCormick.
