Garnavillo man killed in Clayton Co. crash

CLAYTON COUNTY (KWWL) - A Garnavillo man was killed after his vehicle crossed into the path of a Mack truck.

Lee Smith, 21, of Garnavillo, was taken by ambulance to Guttenberg Hospital where he was pronounced dead after a crash Thursday night, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

Smith was eastbound on Millville Road south of Guttenberg near the intersection with Highway 52 just before midnight Thursday when his Ford F-150 drove into the path of a Mack truck driven by Craig Jones, 62, of West Liberty, according to reports.

Jones, whose vehicle was traveling northbound on Highway 52, told responding officers he tried to avoid the crash by swerving left, but still struck Smith's vehicle.

After the impact, Jones' truck caught fire and came to rest in the northbound ditch of Highway 52. He was also taken by ambulance to Guttenberg Hospital with unspecified injuries.

Smith was not wearing his seatbelt, according to the report.
