FRIDAY AM UPDATE:

Authorities have charged 57-year-old Ginger Jefferson with murder in the death of her daughter-in-law, Kerry O'Clair-Jefferson earlier this week in Tama.  Authorities announced the charges at a Friday morning news conference in Tama. They refused to comment on any possible motive for the fatal stabbing.

An autopsy in the death of 32-year-old Kerry O'Clair-Jefferson confirmed Thursday that her death was a homicide. The cause of death was "sharp force injuries of the neck," according to Tama Police.

The Meskwaki Nation Tribal Police and Toledo Police are assisting in the investigation.

Tama Police have taken Ginger Jefferson, 57, of Toledo into custody as a material witness.

Authorities cannot release any information about suspects at this time.

PREVIOUS STORY:

Tama Police have released the name of a woman found dead in Tama Wednesday afternoon.

An officer found the body of 32-year-old Kerry O'Clair-Jefferson at a home in the 100 block of Harmon Street between 2:30 and 3 p.m.

According to her Facebook page, she graduated from South Tama County High School, and went to Marshalltown Community College. She was also a former employee of the Iowa Veteran’s Home, and wrote that her hometown was Toledo.

Tama Chief of Police Jeff Filloon said he believes she did not live at the Harmon Street property, but was staying with the owners.

"Right now we're investigating a homicide," said Filloon. "We don't know a whole lot of details yet."

Tama Police took Ginger Jefferson, 57, of Toledo into custody as a material witness. No one else is being held at this time.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations was on scene after 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. They are being assisted by Tama Police and the Tama County Sheriff's Department.

Several neighbors were shocked that the investigation hits so close to home.

"I'm petrified to think that there could be a murder right here in the neighborhood," said Phyllis Smith, who has lived in the neighborhood for over 30 years.
