Editor: Spaghetti, hamburgers, pizza, chicken parmesan; they all sound good right? When it comes to preventing drug use among our children, it doesn't matter what they eat, it matters who they eat with. Since 1996, research by CASA, the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, has consistently shown that the more often a child eats dinner with his family, the less likely that child is to smoke, drink or use illegal drugs.More >>

Editor: Rep. Scott Garrett, R-Wantage, should accept his challenger, Roy Cho's, request for numerous debates. Given the many challenges facing our region and country, we deserve to hear from the candidates directly and candidly.Of all of the years I have lived in Garrett's district, I have never seen an event advertised where he is going to be. I always read about it afterwards, as if he wants to avoid having constituents who might disagree with him showing up unannounced to any event.More >>

Editor:

Andover Township voters rejoice! For the first time in years you will have a choice when you cast your vote this November. David Kolstad, a 10-year township resident, is an independent candidate for Andover Township Committee. His policies and actions will be influenced by town residents and by what is best for Andover Township, not by party politics or self-interest. He will actively seek participation in township governance by as many township residents as are willing to dedicate their time, energy and expertise to make Andover Township a great place to live.

David Kolstad has been serving Andover Township on the Environmental Commission since 2011. He is a cofounder and treasurer of Sustainable Andover, which was recently formalized as standing committee of the township, and is dedicated to making Andover Township a sustainable community. He believes that a great Andover Township is achieved by encouraging the participation of all of its residents. He believes that we should let every voice be heard and not marginalize those with whom we disagree. Our town, like others in the area, has adopted a “committee” form of government. By design, all members of Andover Township Committee are meant to be equal.

Unfortunately, certain long-serving members of the committee have lost sight of this egalitarian ideal and have begun running the Township Committee as if it were their own private club. One example is health benefits for committee members. Unlike other towns, Andover Township Committee has voted to “grandfather” health benefits for incumbent committee members while discontinuing the benefit for new members. The opposition candidate, himself a member of the old-boys club that the council has become, supports this policy.

David Kolstad believes that it is time for new blood. It is time to return service on Andover Township Committee to the volunteer spirit with which it began. We cannot afford, in these difficult times, to give special treatment to anyone in government, no matter how long or how well they have served.

Let us choose to return Andover Township to the fundamental values that we all cherish. Vote independently. Vote for David Kolstad, Independent for Andover Township.
