Last year, the USD football team only won one game and went winless in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Yotes are 1-1 this season and the schedule is tough again the rest of the way. USD has five ranked teams coming up, including a long road trip Saturday to play Northern Arizona.
The Coyotes haven't played since losing at Kansas, 31-14, almost two weeks ago. Northern Arizona lost to Arizona 35-0 and then beat Cal-Davis by 11 -- the same team USD beat in their opener.
The Lumberjacks are ranked 22nd in the FCS poll and feature Zach Bauman, who is their all-time leading rusher and has three straight 1,000 yard seasons.
"I'm sure that they're down there right now trying to figure out a way to run the football on the University of South Dakota," said head coach Joe Glenn. "We're really going to have to shore up our front seven, front eight, and make sure that we get some guys to him. You won't tackle him very often by yourself. He's got a great low center of gravity with great speed, great burst and good cutback ability. We're really going to have to gang tackle him and come from all angles and keep rallying until we got him down."
USD and Northern Arizona play at 6 pm Central time on Saturday in Flagstaff, Arizona. It's the first meeting between the two schools.
