Jackson County house demolished to make way for Veterans Memorial

Posted: Updated:

Crews demolished a home in Maquoketa Wednesday afternoon to make way for a Veterans Memorial Park.

The land the home used to sit on was donated by Robert Johnson to the Andrew AmVets. Johnson is a member of the Andrew AmVets, a group that is working on creating the Veterans Memorial Park.

Once completed, the memorial park will be a place to honor all veterans from Jackson County. But officials with the Andrew AmVets say the park was built with two Jackson County veterans in mind.

One of those veterans being Robert Johnson's nephew, Staff Sergeant Donald Griffith who was killed in Iraq in 2005. Marine Corporal Zachary Reiff will also be honored at the park. He was killed in Afghanistan in 2011.

Donations are still being accepted for the Jackson County Veterans Memorial Park. Those who are interested in giving donations may do so at the Maquoketa State Bank in Maquoketa.
