Cedar Rapids A&W to be demolished Wednesday

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - The old A&W Family Restaurant on Ellis Boulevard in Cedar Rapids will be demolished on Wednesday morning.

The building was flooded in the record floods of 2008 and has not re-opened since.

Several people in Cedar Rapids have fond memories of the restaurant and had hoped to save it. The Cedar Rapids City Council tried to find a developer to renovate and re-open the flood damaged building, but could not get one lined up.

The building is currently the only drive-in restaurant still standing in the city.

The restaurant's iconic "A&W Family Restaurant" sign will be donated to the Carl and Mary Koehler History Center.

Demolition is scheduled to start at 7 a.m. Wednesday.

To date, the City of Cedar Rapids has demolished 1,125 residential buildings, 576 accessory structures, and 122 commercial buildings that were damaged in the floods of 2008.
