Schmitt announces second bid for Waterloo mayor

City council member Steve Schmitt has announced that he will run again for Waterloo mayor.

Schmitt, who has served as a Waterloo City Council member for six years, announced his intentions Tuesday morning.

He ran for mayor in 2009, losing to current Mayor Buck Clark, who announced his bid for re-election in May.

In his media release, Schmitt said he wanted to reorganize the planning and zoning department to make economic development that department’s number one priority.

“We need to help create good-paying jobs that will give our kids a better opportunity to live, work and raise a family in their hometown," he said.

He also wanted to improve public safety by enforcing all current codes and ordinances.

"This will result in a safer environment, as we all observe the same rules and regulations to keep our neighborhoods safe and clean,” he said.

On the subject of budgets and taxes, Schmitt is in favor of more "collaboration" with other entities and using technology to keep costs down.

“I have talked with council members of neighboring cities and members of our board of supervisors, and they are interested in discussing collaborative opportunities,” he said.

He also said he was in favor of making all council meetings available on TV and online.

“I will work harder, smarter and more collaboratively than my opponent to create a Waterloo we all will be proud to call home,” he said.

The municipal election will be November 5.
