WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Likely one of the oldest students to receive their high school diploma from Waterloo East High School will do so next week.

Audrey Crabtree, 99, was born in 1914 and grew up in Waterloo.

Audrey attended a one-room school house in Raymond growing up. When the Great Depression hit, she was a student at East High and her education was put on delay.

Her family had lost their farm and Audrey had to work with her brother delivering milk to make ends meet.

Audrey married Charles Gerdes from Dunkerton High School in 1932.  The two had originally planned to get married once she graduated.

Balancing her school work, and trying to become a wife was a lot. She delayed becoming a nurse due to her family responsibilities.

As years passed Audrey worked at two flower shops, Jane's and Poyner's. Later she and Chuck bought them in 1957.

Currently Audrey is still active and resides at a retirement home in Cedar Falls.

Audrey's children and grandchildren will present her high school diploma next Monday.
