Iowa City Downtown Race Series raising money for good causes

Posted: Updated:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

A new race series in Iowa City is raising money to help others. The Downtown Race Series kicked off Sunday, raising money for the University of Iowa Dance Marathon and Young Life of Iowa City.

Event organizers want people to come downtown for the run and then stay to support local businesses. The idea came from a group in Colorado. Following the devastating flooding there this week, organizers decided to also collect donations to send to the American Red Cross to help with flood recovery.

"This has been a dream of mine," said Joe Hughes, Race Director. "They did something similar in Boulder, Colorado and we just feel like running through the streets of downtown Iowa City."

The series' other two races will be held in October.
