Hawkeyes dominate ground game, recapture Cy-Hawk trophy 27-21

Mark Weisman ran for 145 yards, while the Iowa defense held Iowa State to just 59 on the ground as the Hawkeyes recaptured the Cy-Hawk trophy with a 27-21 win.

Both offenses were somewhat anemic in the first quarter, going scoreless in the first 15 minutes.  Iowa, however, got the ground game going pushing in to Cyclone territory.  Iowa capped that second quarter drive with a 6 yard pass from Jake Rudock to Kevonte Martin-Manley for a 7-0 lead.  Iowa tacked on a pair of Mike Meyer field goals to lead 13-0 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Iowa State's Quenton Bundrage slipped a BJ Lowery tackle attempt on a 67 yard touchdown reception to put the Cyclones on the board.  Iowa responded with a heavy dose of Weisman, which led to a 26 yard scoring reception by Jacob Hillyer and a 1 yard touchdown run from Rudock for a 27-7 lead with 7:05 left.

The Cyclones didn't go away however, and Richardson hit Bundrage for 2 more Iowa State touchdowns in the final 5 minutes.  The game was still in doubt until the Hawkeyes recovered a Cyclone onside kick with 2:20 left to seal the deal.

The win was the first for Iowa in the series since 2010.
