Dan Morrissey sentenced to 90 years for multiple drug charges

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Dan Morrissey, 37, was sentenced to spend 90-years in prison Friday.

The sentencing comes after Morrissey pleaded guilty to multiple drug charges.

Morrissey is the father of Lyric Cook who disappeared in July of 2012 with her cousin, Elizabeth Collins. The girls were found dead in December.

Morrissey faced more than 200-years in prison after he pleaded guilty to multiple methamphetamine and marijuana charges from incidents that happened in 2011.

He was sentenced for those charges on Friday, September 13th at the Black Hawk County Courthouse.

The sentencing was for four separate cases, each of which contained multiple drug charges.
County Prosecutor Brad Walz asked the judge to sentence Morrissey to 135 years, claiming Morrissey has obtained more than 15 felonies on his record in his adult life.

Defense Attorney Kevin Schoeberl asked the judge to impost a lesser sentence of 30-40 years.

"We agree a prison sentence should be imposed, we just disagree with the amount of time," he told the courtroom.

When the judge asked Morrissey if there was any legal reason to not continue with sentencing, Morrissey said, "I'm scared."

Morrissey told the courtroom he is a born-again Christian, and that his problems don't stem from drugs, but from grief.

He said his dream is to have a picnic at Angel's Park with his teenage son, and that a 135-year sentence would "take that dream away."

Morrissey's mother, who has custody of his teenage son, took the stand and told the courtroom she was proud of her son.

"He is an exceptional young man with compassion and good character," she said.

She also said Morrissey has had a substance abuse problem since he was a teenager.

The judge said Morrissey's 90-year sentence can be appealed within 30 days.

Schoeberl told KWWL after court they will likely file the paperwork to do so.
