Study explores child abuse

Posted: Updated:

A new report by The Institute of Medicine explores reports of child abuse over the past 20 years.

The report shows that physical and sexual abuse against children has declined, however there's been an increase in psychological and emotional child abuse during the same period.

The reasons for the trends are unclear, so investigators are calling for a national surveillance system to improve the accuracy of reported cases.

In 2011 alone, state child protective services agencies encountered more than 670,000 children who were victims of abuse or neglect. Those numbers may underestimate the actual magnitude of the problem because of discrepancies between reported cases and actual rates of abuse.

The report does find that 80 percent of abuse perpetrators are parents.
