Dubuque Regional Airport terminal construction is right on track

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Construction of a new passenger terminal at the Dubuque Regional Airport began in October of 2012. This week, officials say construction for that terminal is right on track. Robert Grierson is Manager at the Dubuque Regional Airport.

"As far as construction goes, we are about a third of the way into the construction process," Grierson said. "In terms of the overall process, we are about half way through it."

"We've got some windows in on the upper level but right now it's just open concrete and beams on the inside. We have the aircraft parking apron, which has been poured, but we have so much more to do. We have to do electrical, water, sewer, the auto parking area has got to be run to it. There is quite a bit more to this." Grierson said.

The terminal expansion will help accommodate the airport's growing passenger rate. Grierson says the existing terminal building was built back in the 1940's. He says it was deemed to small by the 1960's.

"In the 1960's we built another one right next to it. By the mid 80's they had outgrown that one as well so they consolidated the two together. It's kind of a hodge-podge of electrical, sewer, water and everything else. It's really too small to meet our needs." Grierson said.

Airport officials expect the terminal to be completed in December of 2016.
