CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

Wednesday was the first time the presidents at all three Iowa universities reported their the official enrollment numbers to the Board of Regents.

Iowa State University says they are experiencing the largest enrollment in the schools history with 33,241. The University of Iowa says they are holding steady at 31,067 students.

That's the first time in more than 30 years that ISU's enrollment has topped Iowa's.

As for the University of Northern Iowa, they say their enrollment is 12,159 students. That's 359 more students than projected earlier in the year.

First-year UNI president William Ruud said the secret of their success is hard work.

"We stepped it up," Ruud said. "We added some recruitment, folks. We added some admissions officers. We had a lot of good conversations. We got out, were aggressive, and we let people know. We told and sold the story."

Ruud says this is a 3 percent increase across the board from freshmen, transfers and new students.
