More than a third of voters cast ballots in Grundy County, school bond fails

GRUNDY COUNTY (KWWL) -

Ballot counters in Grundy County had their work cut out for them Tuesday night, with more than a third of the county's registered voters casting their decision in the 2013 school elections.  Nearly 1,000 people voted.

But the 988 votes is a 36.18 percent voter turnout for Grundy County, which Auditor Rhonda Deters says is the highest percentage turnout for a regular school election in the past 30 years.

"It's much higher than what we typically expect," she said on the phone Wednesday morning.

Grundy County voters were asked to weigh in on a bond issue to collect nearly eight million dollars for additions to the Grundy Center elementary and secondary school buildings.

The issue failed, with 58 percent of voters saying no.

Superintendent Cassi Murra says the district will reassess its needs and get community input before presenting a new bond issue proposal. That proposal will probably take form September or December 2014.
