Nashua-Plainfield High School principal, Erik Smith, has confirmed that senior Alex Potratz died at a Rochester, Minnesota hospital Tuesday morning as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.
The Chickasaw County Sheriff's Office says the accident happened near 1324 220 Street near Ionia. Authorities say Potratz was driving a pick-up when he lost control of it and went into the ditch.
Alexander was taken to Mercy Medical Center, New Hampton and later transferred to a Rochester, Minnesota hospital where he died of his injuries.
Friends tell us that Potratz, who was a member of the varsity football team, was on his way home from a junior varsity football game on Monday night when the accident happened.
Smith says the cross-country team will not participate in a meet in Waverly and the volleyball game has been postponed. Both events were scheduled for Tuesday. He added that the status of the rest of the week's homecoming activities will be handled on a day-by-day basis.
A candlelight vigil will be held Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. at the football field.
Grief counselors and pastoral and ministerial staff will be available to students and staff all week.
Stay tuned to KWWL for updates when they become available.
