Body found in Mississippi River, likely man missing since 2011

Jackson County officials believe they've found the body of a snowmobiler who went missing more than two years ago.

23-year-old Shawn Berthel, of Jackson County, was snowmobiling with friends in January of 2011, when his vehicle fell through the ice of the Maquoketa River.

Divers searched the river for his body but only ever found his snowmobile.

Monday, during a routine dredging operation on the Mississippi River, the US Army Corps of Engineers found a body in a snowmobile suit, just a few miles north of Sabula, Jackson County sheriff Russ Kettmann said.

While an autopsy in Ankeny will confirm the body's identity, Kettmann said officials were sure enough it was Berthel's that they contacted the man's parents.
