Posted: Updated:
MARION (KWWL) - A Marion man is dead after leading police on a chase early Tuesday morning.

Officers tried to stop 30-year-old Matthew Gates at around 1:11 a.m. Tuesday morning in the 2400 block of 10th Street for a traffic violation, according to Marion Police Chief Harry Daugherty.

Daugherty says Gates would not stop for the officers, and a pursuit was started.

Police say the chase ended about a half-mile away, when Gates' vehicle left the road and hit a house at 1160 Country Club Drive.

Daugherty says Gates died at the scene. He had no passengers in his vehicle.

There was one person in the home at the time, but no one inside was injured.
