Everything in Johnson's Bakery up for bid

Posted: Updated:

It was the end of a chapter for Johnson's Bakery in Waterloo as dozens gathered for an auction Monday.

Everything from the sprinkles to the cardboard cake boxes to the equipment were auctioned off.

"We spent our whole life basically in this building working," said Dennis Johnson. "I grew up in it."

"It's just our folks lived upstairs," said Sharon King, Johnson's cousin. "This is home, but it's time."

Earlier this year, Johnson was offered what he called a fair deal to sell the buildings and retire.

People from all over Iowa gathered for the auction, including Sarah Mormann. She was looking for equipment for her family's catering business in New Vienna.

"When you can take equipment from a business who has loved it and cared for it and used it for some many years and take it back to your place and continue on using it and making it wonderful products -- (it's) kind of carrying on the name," said Mormann.

Johnson says it's a name and business he is really proud of.

"I always say we put 100 percent effort in every day," Johnson said. "Everything wasn't great every day, but it wasn't because we weren't trying because we were always trying to do our best."

Johnson said the buildings are already sold. He couldn't say who bought them, but he said the buyer plans to demolish them.
