Cedar Rapids offering background check service to landlords

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - The City of Cedar Rapids SAFE-CR is offering background check services to the city's landlords for just $8.

In January and March, the Cedar Rapids City Council made changes to the city's charter that require more of landlords.

Landlords must now conduct background checks on all potential tenants. The background check must include reports from Iowa Courts Online, the Iowa Sex Offender Registry, and the National Sex Offender Registry.

The city's service will also do a 50-state background check and list Cedar Rapids arrest information not found on Iowa Courts Online. These services are not mandatory under the new city codes.

The service is only available to landlords with a Landlord Business Permit.
