Gun found in bag of Dunkerton football player

DUNKERTON (KWWL) - A gun was found Friday night in a high school football player's bag, school administrators confirmed Tuesday, but it was unclear if the student had been apprehended yet.

A Dunkerton football player's bag was searched after the team returned to the school Friday night, where administrators found "a weapon," according to Dunkerton Community School officials.

Dunkerton officials say the student whose bag was found has not yet been taken into custody and that, as a result, the school district was under a "secure situation."

Officials there described a "secure situation" to mean that students would not have activities outside of school but would otherwise move around normally.

Dunkerton officials said the secure situation would last until the person who left the weapon in their bag was apprehended.

Administrators of other schools, however, said the weapon found was a gun, and the bag was searched because the football player had left his bag on the bus after being taken to the hospital for an injury, according to Don Bosco district officials.

Principal Rick Blackwell with Don Bosco Catholic High School -- whose junior varsity football team plays at Dunkerton on Tuesday night -- said Don Bosco will play the game against Dunkerton but said in a letter to parents that a police presence will be at the game.

Blackwell's letter also said that school personnel had turned the gun over to the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office and that the student has been removed from school.

That information could not be immediately confirmed by Dunkerton officials.

Blackwell said a police presence at Dunkerton games was "not a normal thing" but that district officials did not anticipate any problems.
