Running is a fairly new hobby for Jim Steger.
"It'll be two years ago in November I started running."
Steger is running in the IMT Marathon in Des Moines on October 20th to help raise money for a clinic in Haiti. A flood in 2004 destroyed the Holy Cross Parish's church, school and clinic. The church and school were rebuilt, but not the clinic.
The plan is to build a new rectory for the church pastor and then turn the current rectory into a medical clinic.
"A dream would be $30,000. That would finish the rectory and be able to start the clinic," said Jim Steger.
Steger lives in Earlville but found out about the parish in Haiti from a friend who attends St. Francis Xavier Church in Dyersville. St. Francis Xavier is a partner church with Holy Cross Parish in Haiti.
In five years, Steger and his wife have visited Haiti four times. He said he fell in love with the people and got inspired to help.
Steger hopes his run for Haiti gets more people involved.
"Most people can't go to Haiti, but if you help us, in a big way you'll be helping. If nothing else we ask for prayers," said Steger.
He and his wife plan to make another trip to Haiti in February. The goal is for the clinic to be open in about a year. It will hopefully be staffed by Haitian doctors and nurses. There is a hospital in the area, but Steger said it's rarely staffed. Building this clinic will provide medical assistance to thousands of people in the parish.
