Northern Illinois shocks Hawks 30-27

Posted: Updated:

Mathew Sims drilled a 36 yard field goal with 4 seconds left as Northern Illinois shocked Iowa in front of a full Kinnick Stadium crowd.

The Hawkeyes fell behind 3-0 early, and Northern Illinois added to that on a big 40 yard connection from Jordan Lynch to Tommylee Lewis for a 10-0 advantage.

Iowa, however, got a spark from their defense.  With the Huskies driving, Hawkeye linebacker Christian Kirksey jarred the ball loose from receiver Luke Eakes, scooped it up himself, and returned it 48 yards for the touchdown.

Iowa tied the game on a Mike Meyer field goal in the second quarter, and took the lead on Jake Rudock's first career touchdown pass, 5 yards to C.J. Fiedorowicz.  The two teams traded 2 more touchdowns as the Hawkeyes led 24-17 at the half.

The teams traded field goals in the second half, and Northern Illinois would tie the game late when Lynch hit Da'Ron Brown on a deep, 33 yard touchdown pass to the corner of the end zone with 5:05 remaining.

After an interception, the Huskies drove back in to field goal range, setting up Sims winning kick in the final seconds.
