Dubuque Campground open for its first holiday weekend of season

One eastern Iowa campground is finally open for one of summer's busiest camping weekends. Miller-Riverview Park and Campground in Dubuque was closed a majority of the summer due to flooding. Due to the high waters, the campground was not able to host campers for the Memorial Day and Fourth of July weekends - 2 weekends that are busy for the campground. Kenneth Clayton is the manager of Miller-Riverview Park and Campground. He says the busiest time for the campground is the Fourth of July.

"We have the fireworks right across the channel there and then we have the air show goes right above us. That weekend we are over capacity." Clayton said.

Clayton says the campground usually makes between $7,000 and $8,000 for the Fourth of July weekend. Labor Day weekend was the first holiday weekend for the campground since opening at the end of July. Although floodwaters have gone away at the campground, campground officials say they are only allowing campers on 80 of the 110 available camping sites. That lack of sites is leading officials to say it's not their busiest Labor Day weekend.

"I'm down a little bit from the other weekends just for the simple fact that I got sites that I don't like to rent out because they are muddy...No one enjoys camping in the mud." Clayton said.

Although this year's Labor Day weekend has not been the busiest, campground officials say since opening this summer, business at the campground has been good.

"It's been a holiday weekend almost every weekend, we are almost to capacity." Clayton said.

The Miller-Riverview Park and Campground will remain open everyday until October 27th.
