Cedar Valley Humane Society kicks off $30,000 in 30 days campaign

For the first time ever, the Cedar Valley Humane Society in Cedar Rapids is using social media as part of a major fundraising campaign. From September 1st to 30th, the humane society hopes to raise $30,000, which is what it costs to provide care for animals at the shelter for a month.

"We vaccinate and heart worm testing and flea treatment and all those kinds of things. We also provide microchip services. So the cost can add up quickly," said Cedar Valley Humane Society Executive Director Chuck Tourtillott.

Another major expense is spaying and neutering all pets before they leave the shelter. Tourtillott said donations are crucial because that's how the shelter remains operational.

"We don't receive any government funding. We don't receive funding from national humane organizations, so when you donate it stays local," said Chuck Tourtillott.

In addition to providing care to more than 1500 animals a year, the Cedar Valley Humane Society also has several large improvement projects to complete, including replacing an old septic system.

Cedar Valley Humane society staffers know $30,000 is a lot of money to raise by the end of September, but they believe it can be done if enough people get involved.

Every donation helps the humane society continue it's mission of finding all the animals good homes.
