Fire causes damage at Postville plant

A fire at a Postville plant caused $25,000 worth of damage, but no one was injured.

According to the Postville fire chief, the call came in around 7:45 Thursday night reporting smoke inside the ILNorplex plant. The fire department was informed the building was being evacuated.

When crews arrived on scene thick black smoke could be seen coming from the roof.

Assistance was called in from Luana and Waukon fire departments.

The Postville fire department was able to put out the fire in under ten minutes using their equipment as well as the plant's sprinkler system.

Authorities say the fire appears to have been caused by a malfunction in the venting switch.

All 50 employees in the area were able to get out of the building safely.

ILNorplex has been operating at about 60% capacity as the result of an explosion at the plant in June that caused about $15 million in damage.
