KBBG Radio serves community mission in Waterloo

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) -

After 36 years of operation, KBBG-FM 88.1's mission is still the same - communicate to educate.

Jimmie Porter founded the station and its first day on the air was July 26, 1978. After Porter passed away in 2007, his wife, Louise "Lou" Porter, now serves as President and CEO of the station.

KBBG predominantly serves the African American community and encourages education among ethnic minorities. It's the largest owned and operated African American radio station in Iowa that's non-commercial.

Being a non-profit organization, KBBG relies heavily on community support; about one-third of its funding is made up of individual and business donations. Station Manager Beverly Douglas said the non-profit aspect is what develops the strong community relationship.

The station's programming consists of issues in health, politics, human interest and religion, to name a few. Being education-driven, the purpose is to provide knowledge for listeners.

"We are sharing information, not preaching," said Douglas.

Wednesday is also the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and Martin Luther King Jr's I Have A Dream speech.

KBBG will play the speech just after 2 p.m. Wednesday on 88.1 FM in celebration of the anniversary. Listeners can also virtually ring the freedom bell at this time by going to www.letfreedomringusa.com.
