Cedar Rapids Fire Department responds to multiple fires on hot day

Posted: Updated:

Tuesday was one of the hottest days of the year and the Cedar Rapids Fire Department responded to several fires.

A house fire in the 900 block of Maplewood Drive NE just after 9:45 a.m. was determined to be arson. Public Information Officer Greg Buelow says the department's investigation shows that the home was burglarized and the fire was intentionally set.

The department responded to two other calls before noon. According to the department's Facebook page, a garbage truck dumped burning contents into the road in the 3800 block of Beverly Road SW.

Charcoal bricks caused issues at a church's garage. There was no damage but the fire department recommends storing metal containers with charcoals outdoors.

Then, Tuesday afternoon the department responded to an apartment fire in the 3000 block of Sherman Street NE. Fire damage was contained to one unit and most damage was in the kitchen. Some smoke damaged filled the rest of the unit. The two residents who live there will be assisted by the Red Cross if cleaning does not get rid of the smell.
