Sumner Police Chief Dennis Cain, injured after Maynard chase, to retire

Posted: Updated:
SUMNER (KWWL) -

Sumner Police Chief Dennis Cain will be retiring from his position on Sept. 3 due to health complications resulting from an injury sustained in a recent high-profile police chase.

Cain was injured after chasing a vehicle driven by Jeremiah Mumford and William Clayton -- both convicted following a bank robbery in Maynard in October of 2012.

Cain had been shot in the neck and hand as a result of those events.

According to Cain's wife, Tammy, his doctors say his right hand has not recovered enough from those injuries to allow him to properly shoot a gun.

Both Mumford and Clayton were convicted in June of 2013 in Bremer County for numerous counts of attempted murder and assault on a Bremer County peace officer stemming from the robbery incident.
