Panthers confident going to opener at ISU

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

The UNI Panthers are heading in to a hostile Jack Trice Stadium with a lot of confidence.

A lot of that has to do with last year's performance at 12th ranked Wisconsin when they rallied from a 19 point fourth quarter deficit.  UNI scored back to back touchdowns, and had a final drive stall as they fell by just 5 against the Badgers.

They did that with a freshman quarterback in Sawyer Kollmorgen.  He now has a year of experience under his belt, and Coach Mark Farley says that opens up options.

"Last year going to Wisconsin, we had to keep it pretty simple, because we had a new quarterback," said Farley, "I didn't have my toolbox full, but I do feel comfortable to say we have a lot of choices as we prepare."

"Working with the receivers this summer, they understand what I'm thinking," added Kollmorgen, "I understand what they're thinking, so we have a lot more chemistry I think."

The last time these 2 played, it was a barnburner 2 years ago.  Iowa State's Steele Jantz scored the game winning touchdown on a one yard keeper with under a minute remaining.

However, Farley says they'll be facing a better Cyclone team than they have in the past.

"They've always been a Big 12 team, but they've got Big 12 players now, and they have depth of the Big 12.  So, I think that's what's really made the difference viewing them as an opponent is their depth is much stronger, and the talent they have on the field is much better than what it maybe was in years past."

Saturday's game kicks off at 7 PM in Ames.
