Eastern Iowa schools dismiss early because of heat

SPRINGVILLE (KWWL) -

On a day where students would rather keep cool at the pool, they instead were stuck in hot classroom huddled up next to a fan.

The Springville School District among the host of schools with early dismissals Monday because its elementary school is without air conditioning.

"I think some of them have been affected by the heat," said Kim Wittenburg of her students, a second grade teacher at the elementary school.

That meant multiple fans blowing and plenty of water breaks for her class.

"It gets a little warm.  Hard for them to concentrate," Wittenburg said.

"We don't just dismiss because kids are hot. We dismiss because learning suffers," said Brian Ney, Springville Schools superintendent.

The district is in early discussions of installing air conditioning at the elementary school down the road.

The move would be a significant cost which would likely have to be paid for through property or sales taxes.

It's the same financial challenge facing many districts throughout the state.

"To retrofit an old building with air conditioning, depending on the vintage of the building, is expensive to do," Ney said.

For now it's a matter of coping with extreme August temperatures.

Given the forecast, it appears this heat wave will be sticking around for a while.

"Once you get the building that hot for a couple of days, it does not cool off quickly, so I would say the chances of early dismissal throughout Iowa and Eastern Iowa is pretty high for the rest of the week," Ney said.
