Corvette enthusiasts burn rubber at Hawkeye Downs

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

More than 40 cars are highlighting the action at Hawkeye Downs on Saturday and Sunday for the Cedar Rapids Corvette Club's annual autocross event.

Drivers run against the clock on a 3/4 mile course.  Participants from seven different states have taken to the asphalt so far this weekend.

The locals are tearing it up as well.  That includes 70 year old Bob Bowen of Cedar Rapids.  Bowen's been a club member for 46 years and loves to get out on the track.

"I don't bowl, I don't fish, so I've got to have a hobby," says Bowen, and I've been doing this since '67.  You get excited and it's fun to do, and it's a safe place to do the racing.  The biggest thing, though, is the people.  I've got friends all over the country now."

On top of the autocross event, the Cedar Rapids club hosts several car shows throughout the year to raise money for local charities.
