Eastern Iowans honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Eastern Iowans gathered Saturday to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The African American Museum of Iowa held an event to honor the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. That's when Dr. King delivered his famous "I Have a Dream Speech."

The Cedar Rapids event was held outdoors near a sculpture in King's honor. Words from the speech stretch across the sculpture.

Speakers reminded the audience of the importance of that speech.

"Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., he was so instrumental in changing all facets of our society," said Michael Kates, African American Museum of Iowa. "I don't think we really sometimes grasp how much he changes and what he was able to accomplish."

Event organizers say it's important to remember King and everything he did for the civil rights movement. They hope today's young people continue to learn what King fought for.
