DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

The incoming class at Loras College is one of the largest classes they have had in 20 years with 418 students. People at Loras tell us it's a number of things that is drawing students to attend the college.

"One is we marketed our Four State Flagship tuition program to suggest to families that you can come to a great place like Loras and it is fairly affordable," said Jim Collins, President of Loras College. "I think the other thing is really related to outcomes. As much as people are talking about placement averages and the difficulties of getting a job, when you talk about nationally in 2012 only 55% (graduates) are in jobs or graduate school. Loras' class of 2012, 96.5% are in jobs or graduate school," said Collins.

In December, Loras College began offering the Four State Flagship tuition program. The program allows students who academically quality and hold a certain household income to enroll at Loras at the same price as their state flagship institution. For example, if a student were to live in the state of Iowa, that student can come to Loras under the same conditions and same price as the University of Iowa. In 2010, Loras College also had a large incoming class of more than 400 students. Collins says the large numbers are a great accomplishment for the school.

"It's a terrific accomplishment and it is not typical right now throughout the country among private schools." Collins said.

Besides Loras, Luther College says they're enrollment is slightly lower compared to other years. But officials at the school say they have seen an increase with incoming students in the past two years. In Cedar Rapids, Coe College officials say preliminary estimates suggest this could also be one of the largest incoming classes in the school's history.
