IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

The Iowa City Fire Department was called to a fire in a three-story apartment building Wednesday night.  It happened just before 6:30 p.m. at 720 Market Street.

Tenants were evacuating the building when fire crews arrived, but firefighters had to help one person out safely.

Responders encountered heavy smoke and say they had the fire under control shortly after arriving, but remained on the scene for the next two hours.

Damage is estimated at $2,000, and tenants were allowed back into their apartments after rescuers cleared the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
