A long time favorite place for many tourists of the Tri-State area is now known as one of America's Prettiest Towns. According to Forbes magazine, Galena, Illinois, was named one of America's Prettiest Towns in August.

"It's really an honor, the community works very hard to keep the city looking beautiful," said Tonia Blair, Director of Interactive Marketing with "All of the historic buildings, and all the stuff that it takes to keep up those buildings and a town like this. The community works very hard to do that, so this is a really great honor."

David Lewis has owned the Great American Popcorn Company since August of 1994. His business is located in downtown Galena, an area known to drawn many tourists. He says, he wasn't surprised the town was mentioned as one of the prettiest.

"There is an old saying that someone came up with a long time ago, that Galena is the town that time forgot," he said. "I think their is some truth to that because you can go up and down the river and see a bunch of old river towns, but most of them are mere shadows of what they were in their hay day. We have managed to keep it."

That historic charm draws more then one million tourists to the Galena area per year, according to Blair. Lewis says it's those tourists that bring revenue to his business. He says more then 90% of his businesses revenue comes from those tourists.

"Without it (the tourists) we wouldn't exist." he said.

Blair says the mention in Forbes magazine will lead to even more tourists coming to visit the area.

"It's always been a beautiful town and we do the best we can to get the word out about it," she said. "But something like this is national recognition, it's nice."

Another town also mentioned in Forbes magazine as one of America's Prettiest Towns is Decorah, Iowa. Officials at the Decorah Visitors Bureau also believe they will see an increase in both tourism and economic development in Decorah due to the mention in Forbes magazine.
