AUDIO: Police release 911 call from homeowners who shot escaped inmate
BEDFORD, Iowa (AP) - Authorities have released a 911 call by an Iowa woman who reported her husband had shot an escaped inmate inside the couple's home.
The Taylor County Sheriff's Department released the recording Wednesday. In it, 66-year-old Carolyn Mauderly, of Bedford, quietly tells a dispatcher that an intruder is in her house. She gives her address before the call is cut off.
A dispatcher calls back and Carolyn Mauderly says her husband, 71-year-old Jerome Mauderly, has shot Rodney Long. She adds that Long is lying in the middle of the kitchen floor.
Long broke into the couple's rural home Monday night and held them against their will for several hours.
Authorities say Long escaped from a Clarinda prison Friday before being suspected of shooting a sheriff's deputy on Sunday. The deputy survived.
