Text message scam hits Cedar Valley

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) -

There is an apparent scam targeting people with bank cards going through the Cedar Valley.

Victims report receiving a text message urging you to call another phone number, claiming your card has been deactivated.

People who have received the text message expressed concerns.

"I thought it was really scary, because first of all how did they get my phone number?" said Sarah Olson, who received the text message.  "And secondly, I felt a little violated because basically they're just preying on people's first reaction to panic, I mean, I almost called the number."

Waterloo Police say these sorts of scams are common and say you should never give out your personal information over a text message or phone call.

They recommend you get in touch with your bank if you have questions.
