Construction expected to cause some delays for UI move-in week

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

For the Hill family of Oskaloosa, dorm move-in day is filled with mixed emotions.

"I'm excited to get my room set up because I'm a girl.  Girls like to do that stuff, but it's kind of a hassle to pack it all up and move it," said Kylie Hill, an incoming University of Iowa freshman.

The hill's chose to limit the hassle by moving Kylie into the dorms a couple of days before the worst of the rush..

"All freshmen move-in is on Wednesday so we wanted to come a couple of days early to avoid all that," said Kylie's mom Tracy.

University officials are anticipating this year's peak move in times on Wednesday and Thursday to be a little more hectic than normal.

"There will very likely be delays," said University of Iowa spokesperson Tom Moore.

That's because of a record amount of campus construction and a project off campus, which may cause the biggest headache.

Department of Transportation crews continue to work on the Interstate 80 westbound off-ramp at Dubuque Street.

That means travelers coming in from Chicago and the Quad Cities will be rerouted to campus through the Dodge Street exit.

"It will take some patience and so we're just trying to do all we can though to help make it go as smooth as possible," Moore said.

Kylie Hill says getting moved in a little early is one less thing she'll have to worry about leading up to her first year of college.

"When there's more people it's more stressful and chaotic," she said.
