D-NH moms take to the field

DIKE (KWWL) -

At Dike-New Hartford, training camp is in full swing, but Saturday's run through wasn't about the players, it was about the parents

"I decided last spring we were going to do it, and I think we've had fun with it," said head Coach Don Betts

He's talking about the first ever Wolverine football mom's camp, a chance for mothers and grandmothers to see what their kids go through during the fall.

"As I told the moms, everything's got to work together if you're going to be successful," said Betts, "Eleven guys trying to get something done is hard to do sometimes."

Parents like Susan Parker, mom of quarterback Carson, and Julie Cuvelier, who's son Ben plays running back, got a chance to run plays at their boys positions."

"I thought it was a great idea," said Susan, "I wish I could've done it when I was a freshman mom, but I'm just really glad Coach Betts took the time to do this."

Like many of the other moms, they also loved the chance to give their kids a lick during blocking and tackling drills.

"What's the drill called?" Julie Cuvelier asked her son.

"High and hard," Ben responded.

"High and hard, and I hit him, and I hit him hard.  I think."

Susan Parker also enjoyed the opportunity.  "I got to pretend to tackle him.  That was fun, I enjoyed that, but I don't want anyone else to do it the rest of the season."

On top of running drills, the moms learned more about the game in general to make those fall Friday nights a bit more enjoyable.

"I know my mom asks a lot of questions about the game," said Ben, "so it's probably pretty nice to teach her a little bit."

As far as the moms' performances on the field, their sons say there's a good amount of work yet to be done.

"She did pretty good," said Carson Parker, "She's got some things to work on, but it was fun.  It was good working with her.  She did a good job."
