Man convicted of Cedar Rapids murder will appeal

An Iowa Supreme Court ruling Friday could open the door for dozens of juveniles to appeal their sentences, including one man convicted of murder in Cedar Rapids.

Denum Null is appealing. Null was sentenced to 75 years in prison for the 2010 murder of Kevin Bell in Cedar Rapids.

Null, who was originally charged with first-degree murder, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree robbery.

In his appeal, Null argued that because he was 16 years and 10 months old, the length of the sentence equals cruel and unusual punishment.

The Iowa Supreme Court ruled that his conviction stands, but ordered the district court to sentence Null again.
