One of the hardest parts of starting a business is funding, but some are finding that online resources like Kickstarter are making it much easier.

Eric Dodge of Waterloo has spent the last four and half years experimenting with the idea of running his own brewery.

“My brother started brewing about a year before I did. The more I talked to him the move it intrigued me and I started looking into it and thought I'd give it a shot,” Dodge said.

Dodge started with home kits and expanded to more complex brews. After brewing more than 200 gallons of beer and many good reviews from friends and strangers, he thinks he has a knack at it.

"Unfortunately I'd figured financially I'd never be able to make it happen…The start up cost were just astronomical.”

Thanks to some good old fashion networking, Dodge discovered Kickstarter, a website for business entrepreneurs looking to make their dreams come true.

“I can kind of advertise myself and find some like minded people that like beer and like the idea of a brewery opening locally that could help donate, pledge some funds and build it up that way,” Dodge said.

But Dodge is still networking the “old fashion way”. Dodge Brewery will be one of the more than 50 exhibitors at this weekend's Stem and Stein event. Dodge brewery will sample two beers this weekend: citrus wheat and chocolate peanut butter stout.

Stem and Stein is Saturday from 4 – 8 p.m. at the Riverloop Amphitheatre.
